Excellent Drives and Fast
review by:Robert Hart rating:

Purchased 4 of these drives and must say worth every penny. The drives are quiet, cool running and are the fastest 5400 drives I have used. The speed is almost on par with my Seagate 7000.12 series drives and considering the 7000.12 drives are 7200rpm that says a lot.

Still better off using 7200rpm drives for general system and boot drives but for storage these drives are the dogs nuts. Currently use these as hotswap drives using Antec SATA hotswap caddie and use a portable program called HotSwap! which allows me to hotplug without getting any data or cache errors when hotpluging in window XP.

Highly recommended and will seriously be buying more shortly.

Great Drives

Just bought 8 of these for storage purposes and am really impressed.

Drives are amazingly quiet and although not the fastest around are ideal as a storage / backup option. (Am currently using a WD Caviar Black for my op system and the 1.5tb Greens banchmark against it at about 75%) - When buying remember these are a 'green' drive and therefore focused on a different market to those who are looking for pure performance.

The only issue I did have was that the drives are classed as 'Advanced Format Drives' (AFD's). This causes no problems under Vista or 7 however under XP it is recommended that you use Western Digital's Align Utility (free download on WD's site).

This program is supposed to identify AFD's and re-allign them after formatting to optimise performance. My WD black is not a AFD however the align utility seemed to want to re-align it!

The only way I could get round this was to disconnect the greens from the SATA ports and reconnect them via an external enclosure using USB. The align utility then recognised the black as a non AFD and the greens as AFD's.

The whole process took about 10 mins per drive and didn't make any noticable difference (performance or usability) however if you search for WD's align utlity on the web you will seem why it is claimed to be required.

Must also thank ebuyer for the service. Drives were ordered at 7.30pm on 10/03/10 using next day delivery (about £8) and arrived at 11.00 the following morning - great service.

Excellent

The first thing I'd say is if you're on XP you have to use the WD align tool. I didn't realise this at first. I created 3 partitions, installed Windows on one of them, and I was ready to send it back for a refund. The performance was terrible. Copying files took forever. BUT I ran the align tool and suddenly everything is like lightning in comparison. It's replaced a 250GB 7200rpm drive, and accessing the folders etc doesn't seem to suffer at all from the lower rpm this drive uses. Admittedly I haven't exactly filled the drive yet, with only about 500GB on it at the moment, but so far I'm impressed.
The biggest difference from my old drive is the noise. There is no clicking or buzzing like I'm used to. I can't hear when Windows has stop loading anymore. The only evidence of noise when you're pushing the drive hard is a very slightly increased wrrrrrrrrrr, which I only noticed when the side of my case was off. It also runs about 5 degrees cooler than the other WD 500GB 7200rpm drive which is running in the next bay.

Overall, I highly recommend it

Good drive but had problems

had problems formatting this 1.5TB drive and only managed to get 1.1TB, managed to get round this by installing windows from scratch and formatting it fully that way. Besides this issue i had no problems with the hard drive and everything works fine.

N.B my computer only sees 1.36TB, this may be different for other users. But seriously... thumbs up :)

Good drive

I like this drive. Fast, and really quiet.

I bought it to replace a failed Seagate ST31500341AS 7200rpm 1.5TB drive. Wow, this is so much quieter, when it was sitting outside my PC I still struggle to hear it and had to touch it to check it had actually span up.

I was worried about having to re-align the partitions, when I found out this was an Advanced Format Disk, but it was no problem. I was installing Windows 7 fresh, and it automatically made the partitions correctly aligned. The WD align software confirmed that it was fine.
