Overview
Product Description
Great value wireless-G CableDSL Router! If you need more switch ports, then the GS608 is an ideal companion product.
NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router lets you experience the blazing-fast network wireless speeds of 54 Mbps - up to five times faster than the popular 802.11b wireless network. These higher speeds make it a snap to web surf, download large files, videoconference, stream high-quality digital movies, MP3 music and photos and play online games. This wireless router also works with 802.11b wireless products so you can use it with your existing 802.11b devices and your new 54 Mbps (802.11g) devices. Auto-sensing chooses the fastest connections possible on your 10/100 Mbps wide area network and four local area network ports. True Firewall (SPI) advanced security provides maximum protection from professional hackers. URL blocking and e-mail alerts provide parents with controls to limit access to inappropriate web sites and monitor children's access. Simple to install, you just follow the cues shown on your PC screen and your router will be up and running in no time. Smart Wizard auto-detects and configures for the best ISP connection, while UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) makes it easy to use your computers, gaming consoles and other client devices - wireless and Ethernet - for gaming, instant messaging, and other applications.
High speeds propel media-rich content across your network in no time. You can conveniently share your cable/DSL connection with many users on your network with or without wires. NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router delivers 10/100 Mbps (auto-sensing) WAN and LAN connections and interoperability with 54 Mbps 802.11g) and 11 Mbps (802.11b) devices over a 2.4 GHz band wireless network.
A true firewall secures your network against hackers: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Denial of Service (Dos) attack prevention averts potential threats by scanning incoming traffic and Network Address translation (NAT) shields your networked devices from intruders. Powerful WEP encryption (40/64- or 128-bit) on the wireless LAN conceals your information from eavesdroppers. MAC Address Control prevents unauthorized access to your wireless network. VPN pass-through give secure Internet access to your office or corporate network.
Parents are able to limit web access by blocking offensive content and URL addresses, and the router sends real-time email alerts and logs of all network web activity. Comprehensive anti-virus protection ensures safety for your networked computers.
Smart Wizard simplifies setup - it automatically detects and configures your router for virtually all ISP connections. Install Assistant, NETGEAR's interactive tutorial, gives you simple prompts to guide you through each step of your installation. Applications that support UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) may be enabled to automatically interact with users over the Internet. Sleek design that comes with a vertical stand saves space.

Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router - Additional Comments
operating system:
Windows XPIt`s some time now since I bought this piece of kit and reviewed it *without* having used its wireless capabilities, so I thought I`d add an update. Okay, I`ve got the router sat downstairs in the lounge, with a Windows 98 PC and an Epson printer (via a Netgear print server) directly connected over Ethernet cable. The cable modem plugs straight into the router, again via Ethernet (against my ISP`s recommendation to use USB). A Windows XP sits in an upstairs bedroom, approx 25 - 30 ft away, and communicates via a Netgear wireless PCI card. Signal strength is always `Excellent` or `Very Good` and I rarely get any problems. Wireless setup was a little tricky, as XP tries to do everything for you - some tweaks were needed, especially to get WEP implemented properly. I got a very early version of the firmware with my router and have since downloaded an upgrade from Netgear`s Website and successfully applied it.
Most important thing I`ve picked up is the need to configure as many of the security options as you can. Everyone probably knows by now that wireless networks are really insecure, but with a bit of work, you can make the hacker`s job much more difficult. The five steps you should follow are:
1) Change your default SSID - don`t leave it as `Netgear`
2) Turn off SSID broadcasting - prevent discovery of your network through scanning
3) Turn on MAC address restrictions - only allow your own hardware to connect
4) Turn on 128-bit WEP - only allow access with a network key
5) Turn off DHCP - assign all your local IP addresses manually
In addition, you can also turn down the signal strength so that it`s just enough to reach your most distant piece of kit - and not over the other side of the road, like mine was when I first tested it with a wireless laptop outside !
These steps won`t make your network impregnable, but they will make it a lot more secure than the guy next door`s, so with any luck, the hacker-in-the-back-of-the-van parked outside will be cracking his network and not yours !
Great Piece of Kit!
operating system:
Windows 2000Once I had this set up and working, it was absolutely superb! No problems with the hub side but I had no luck getting the cable modem and router to communicate! That was until I remembered that I had to register the MAC address of the router with the broadband ISP! After that and a full reset of the Cable modem and router, all was jolly! The wireless signal is excellent throughout the house.
Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router
operating system:
Windows XPWell, I've had my WGR614 up and running for a couple of weeks now and I have to agree, it's a great piece of kit. It was incredibly easy to set up - being a networking newbie, I chose the wizard option to configure it, and basically it just told me I already had a valid Internet connection, so nothing else was needed (no firmware updates to download, no software to install, everything's done via the browser interface). I was up and surfing within ten minutes ! Oh, I did have to plug my two PCs into it and connect it to the cable modem (tough job !).
I'm not ready to go wireless just yet, so I've simply switched off that function until I need it. Even with one of its main uses out of action until I buy my wireless cards, I've still got a four-port Fast Ethernet switch, a router and a firewall, all in one, for £85 - a bargain !
I too have accessed my router from work (not for any real purpose, just to show off to the guys in the office, really !). It's even a good-looking box, sleek and silver, matching my cable modem ... a vast improvement on the clunky dark blue boxes of yesteryear.
So, if you're looking for an 802.11g wireless router, BUY THIS ! If you've got an existing 802.11b network and you're're looking to upgrade your wireless router, BUY THIS ! If, like me, you're planning to go wireless soon, BUY THIS !
PS. In case you're wondering, no, I don't work for Netgear !
Too good to be true.
operating system:
Windows XPThere just has to be a catch with this product. It turned up at 9am and I had a fully functioning wireless network in under 30 minutes. It took longer to get it out of the box than it did to get it working.
I'm now sat at work and can also access the control panel over the internet. Money well spent.
Thankfully I read the previous review when I order it so I knew to turn off the cable modem for a short period so that it would refresh with the ISP.
Works great with NTL
operating system:
Not ApplicableAfter initial difficulties I called the Netgear tech support-they were great. This is what I did: Remove all firewall software. Delete any bridges that XP creates in StartMenu-My Network Places. Don't do MAC spoofing-in fact don't do anything in the Netgear Admin. Wire everything up then turn off NTL settopbox for 5 mins. Turn on router then settopbox. Then check if WAN has IP address in Router admin screens. Run ipconfig /renew from command prompt on PC to get router assigned ip address. Browse to any page(eg www.microsoft.com) using pc and NTL redirect to their register-a-mac-address page. Fill in details as instructed. Turn everything off and on. Finished. 36Mbps connection to NETGEAR WG311 54mbps 802.11g Wireless PCI Card 50127 in next room - great.
How do they do it?
operating system:
Windows XPI was told by my ISP installer to buy Netgear because they seemed to be a better product than anything else on the market at that price bracket. This wireless router does exactly what you ask of it and performs well all around my house. It has may other features that can be useful when configuring your network. For example, I can configure my network so my kids laptop only has access to their gaming sites at certain times of the day/week. Therefore they always get their home work done first and dont stay up all night because of my automatic curfew! Excellent product...
Quick and easy
operating system:
Windows 2000After much searching around at various products, and asking the advice of work colleagues with wireless already installed, I decided to go with the WGR614 router and WG511 PCMCIA card.
Connection to my Telewest broadband was a piece of cake (once I had the correct MAC address registered - note that the MAC address on the bottom of the label is for the LAN port, NOT the cable connection port which is the one you need. You can only get this via the web browser!), and I had my desktop PC running XP Pro and my laptop running W2K up and surfing with no problems (both connected directly to the router)
Installation of the PCMCIA card in the laptop was straight forward, and after setting a few security options (changing the default SSID and enabling encryption) I was up and running in another room very quickly.
The router is in the upstairs front bedroom, and I work downstairs to the rear of the house, and get a signal strength of around 95%. I have taken my laptop to the bottom of the garden (about 70ft away from the house), and was still getting 56% signal strength and surfing with no problem.
After hearing and reading of a few problems with the WG511 card, I can safely say that mine worked straight out of the box, and I would highly recommend both of these products.
buy this router
operating system:
Windows XPi set aside an evening for getting this working. and was up and running in 15 minutes.
i run two dell laptops at home. i just plugged in the router, connected to the phone line with the filter it came with. and plugged the supplied rj45 between the router and my laptop. connected straight away to its settings screen, and it was really simple to supply the wireless and connection settings from my ISP.
About two minutes later i disconnected the RJ45, rebooted everything, discovered the wireless network (laptop with XP service pack 2 was better for wireless discovery) and i was up and surfing from both machines.
I walked round every corner of my house and i get a superb signal even though the router is tucked away under my bed.
I really dont have a bad word to say about this product, looks ease of use, durability everything is 5* perfect.
Very easy!
operating system:
Not Applicablenever had such an easy setup with any hardware.simly run the cd....it takes you through the steps with the aid of pictures....then bingo...you have a wireless network...i also have a 54mbps card for my laptop so share the internet and hard disks between the two!
1 problem though, i dont know how to get outlook to work on the laptop...it wont send emails and always says the smtp is wrong...any ideas
Phew
operating system:
Windows XPFirst sent wrong item but finally right one arrived (customer services did work with no problems!). Connecting to NTL Home - had one of their USB ethernet adaptors so once I realised to set the Netgear to that MAC address rather than my laptops internal MAC address, it went straight in. Using one of the ebuyer USB wireless adaptors. This also plugged and played straight away.
