GeForce RTX 4060 Family

NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce RTX 4060 family of NVIDIA graphics cards at the end of March 2023. The first of these cards to hit the market was the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, releasing a day after the announcement of the GeForce RTX 4060 family. It wouldn't be until late June that the non-Ti version of the card you'll find on this page would release.

Just like every other RTX 40 Series graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 is based on NVIDIA's third generation RTX architecture, codenamed Ada Lovelace. Compared to the Ampere architecture before it, Ada Lovelace promises double the efficiency, ray tracing, and AI performance with new streaming multi-processors, third-gen RT cores, and fourth-gen Tensor Cores.

RTX 4060 vs RTX 3060

As with both other GeForce RTX 4060 family graphics cards - the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and RTX 4060 16GB - the RTX 4060 has less cores across the board than its predecessor, the RTX 3060.

The old RTX 3060 is equipped with 3,584 CUDA Cores, 112 Tensor Cores, and 28 RT Cores, while the new RTX 4060 features 3,072 CUDA Cores, 96 Tensor Cores, and 24 RT Cores. However, these cores are clocked considerably faster, with the GeForce RTX 4060 reaching 2.46GHz boost clock compared to the RTX 3060's 1.78GHz.

Video memory is another area the old 12GB RTX 3060 isn't surpassed by the new 8GB RTX 4060. This is a result of the RTX 4060's smaller 128-bit bus width, limiting how many 32-bit 2GB GDDR6 memory modules the card can support.

RTX 4060 Gaming Performance

Despite these differences, the RTX 4060 is more powerful than the RTX 3060. With the more advanced architecture of Ada Lovelace and higher boost frequencies combined, NVIDIA's claiming that the GeForce RTX 4060 is on average 20% faster than the RTX 3060. And that's without the frame-rate boosting DLSS 3, a technology exclusive to RTX 40 Series graphics cards.

Powered by AI, DLSS 3 can generate entirely new frames in-between existing ones, amplifying frame rates by up to four times. To learn more, check out our blog Why Should I Buy a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series GPU? - DLSS 3 and DLSS Frame Generation Explained.

RTX 4060 Power Consumption & Form-Factor

At the heart of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, you'll find NVIDIA's AD107 graphics processing unit. Interestingly, this is the same chip that's used in RTX 4060 and RTX 4050 gaming laptops. As such, the NVIDIA RTX 4060 is extremely power-efficient. It's rated at a TGP (effectively the card's power consumption) of just 115W. Compare that to the next tier up of the RTX 40 Series with the RTX 4070's 200W TGP, and then the RTX 4090's monstrous 450W TGP, and it's easy to see just how little wattage the GeForce RTX 4060 pulls for a modern NVIDIA graphics card. What's more, the actual power consumption under a typical gaming load is even less at around 100W, according to NVIDIA.

A motherboard's PCIe socket already supplies 75W of power to the graphics card. So, it's entirely possible to power the RTX 4060 with a single 6-pin connector, providing an additional 75W. All in all, you'll only need a 550W PSU to power a whole RTX 4060-equipped gaming PC. With such low power consumption, a massive cooling solution simply isn't needed for the RTX 4060. Most of the RTX 4060 graphics cards on this page sport a dual-slot, dual-fan design that's sure to fit into even small form-factor computer cases. There's ultra-compact single-fan designs, too.
