Why Should I Buy a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB Graphics Card?

There's two version of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti: an 8GB card and, as you'll find on this page, a 16GB card. This isn't an RTX 3050 6GB/8GB situation, mind you, where the lower memory model has the rest of its specs reduced compared to the higher memory model. Rather, the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and 16GB are pretty much identical to one another in all areas expect the amount of video memory.

Both of these NVIDIA graphics cards boast 4,352 CUDA Cores, 136 Tensor Cores, and 34 RT Cores. Even the 128-bit wide memory bus is the same across both cards, despite the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB's doubling of memory. With an effective memory bandwidth of 288 GB/s, the memory isn't faster, either. There's just more of it.

Is 16GB of VRAM Worth It?

This makes for an interesting question: is the price premium of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB worth it for an additional 8GB of VRAM alone? For a good while, 8GB of VRAM used to be more than enough for gaming. But as we progress further into the current console generation, with developers targeting current-gen platforms exclusively, we're starting to see more and more games push right up against or even exceed 8 gigabytes' worth of video memory consumption.

You could always turn down a game's texture setting to reduce consumption, though this is too much of a compromise for some. High-res textures have the most transformative impact on a game's appearance, after all. 16GB of VRAM is arguably overkill for a card of its calibre (1080p gaming), but if you'd rather be able to whack textures to 'ultra' in every game without worry (in the here-and-now and in the future), go for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB.

RTX 4060 Ti 16GB Power Consumption and Form Factor

The RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is rated at a TGP (total graphics power) of 165W, which is ever so slightly higher than the 8GB version's 160W TDP. This is purely due to the power draw of the additional memory chips. The card isn't clocked higher out of the box or anything like that.

Like the 8GB version, NVIDIA recommend a 550W PSU to power a whole RTX 4060 Ti 16GB-equipped gaming PC, and it can be powered by a 1x 8-pin power cable. For context, the slower AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT has a typical board power of 190W, so the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is remarkably efficient for its performance.
