Why do I need a laptop stand?

There are multiple benefits to using a laptop stand, rather than just plonking your laptop on top of your desk.

Ergonomics and comfort

When you're at a desk, operating a laptop as-is is not exactly ergonomic. It's generally recommended to position your computer's display at eye-level as to avoid hunching over and straining your neck. Without a laptop stand, the display of your laptop will fall well below eye-level. This isn't great if you plan to sit down and work on your laptop for any extended period of time. For use with external displays

The elevation provided by a laptop stand is perfect for those who use an external monitor in addition to their laptop's display. When a laptop is laid flat on a surface, such as a desk, its fans won't have a lot of clearance to draw in fresh, cool air. This can result in your laptop operating at a higher temperature, in turn reducing performance. A laptop stand, on the other hand, lifts your laptop off your desk, improving air circulation in and around the device.
