A worthy upgrade from the lower level dual core CPUs
operating system:Windows VistaI bought this quad core as a replacement for a dual core E6600 2.4ghz CPU. The Q6700 is basically the best "regular" chip my motherboard can take bar the "extremely" priced Extreme Edition chips so I thought it would be a good way to max out my current set up for a sane amount of money.
The CPU comes "as is" in a small brown box so please ensure you have a fan/cooler picked out well in advance. A fresh bottle of thermal paste is also advised for cooling purposes.
Performance-wise this chip is excellent with noticeable improvements in OS responsiveness and 3D gaming. I can encode DVDs whilst playing a game with MP3s playing in the background. All four cores appear in Task Manager and it runs like a dream if you have a piece of modern software which can balance it's load across all four cores. This chip also was the tipping point which turned me from a 32-bit user to 64. I now run Vista Ultimate x64 as smooth and stable as I presume it was intended to be. Any CPU that can run 64 bit software is a bonus for the way the PC market is heading slowly but surely these days.
This chip also has good overclocking potential as is noted in virtually all of the reviews you'll find on the web. My first casual attempt managed to get it up to 3.0ghz stable on air cooling (yes, it was a bit noisy though!). Depending on your cooler and own o/c experience you could achieve a nice improvement over the stock speeds but obviously caution and a good knowledge of your system's limits is advised. Tread carefully to avoid hardware damage. I settled my Q6700 at 2.85ghz which is all I really need for what I do.
All in all a fantastic CPU for the money. Don't waste your cash on the boxed version, get this OEM and a Zalman 9500 LED cooler and you're away!
Awesome Tiny Little CPU
operating system:Windows VistaPlugged this into my Asus P5K Premium, with an Artic Cooler 7 Pro on top of it. Runs like a dream, idles around 32 degrees C and tends to max out at 44 degrees C, all within spec. Managed to overclock this beasty to 3.4ghz with comparative ease, on a 1333mhz bus. The G0 stepping CPU's are certainly worth the extra money.
