Intel Core i7 Processors - What You Need to Know
With 2021's 12th-Gen Intel Core, Intel transitioned from a monolithic CPU architecture to a hybrid design, featuring a mix of little Efficient-cores (E-cores) and big Performance-cores (P-cores).
As you can probably infer, P-cores are your more conventional, powerful CPU cores, which are used to run performance-intensive programs and games. E-cores, on the other hand, are designed to handle smaller, less important tasks (like whatever's sitting in your system tray) with much greater efficiency, in turn allowing an Intel Core i7 processor's P-cores to churn away without interruption.
Prior to the switch to a hybrid CPU architecture, Intel Core i7 processors were 8-core/16-thread affairs, and every one of these cores were what we now know as Performance-cores.
Take a look at the latest Intel Core i7 processors, like the Intel Core i7 14700K, and you'll see that they now offer up to a whopping 20 cores and 28 threads. This is, on paper at least, an enormous increase - why would you ever need more than this, why would you ever choose an 8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 over a modern Intel Core i7?
Although the sheer number of cores and threads of these 12th-Gen-and-later Intel Core i7 processors is impressive, you shouldn't let the big numbers sway your purchasing decision too much.
The Intel Core i7 14700K, for example, is equipped with a total of 20 cores. But if you search the Intel processor's spec-sheet, you'll find that 8 of these cores are Performance-cores (just like Intel Core i7s of old and AMD Ryzen 7 processors), while the rest are Efficient-cores.
So, it's not as big of a departure as it may first appear. E-cores can improve performance slightly in certain workloads, but it's still very much the P-cores which do all the heavy lifting. They're what you should be looking at when comparing Intel Core i7 processors to the rest of Intel's range.
Why Should I Buy an Intel Core i7 Processor?
When it comes to gaming, the performance of an Intel Core i5 processor is generally enough to maintain a rock-solid 60 frames-per-second in many of the latest releases (barring shader compilation stutter). Paired with a mid-range graphics card from either NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel themselves, an i5 lets you build a proper gaming-grade rig without breaking the bank.
But what if you want to push higher than 60 FPS in CPU-heavy games on a high-refresh gaming monitor, all while having real-time ray tracing effects enabled (which puts extra load on your CPU, not just your GPU)? For this, you'll want to step up to an Intel Core i7 processor. Today's i5s have 6 Performance-cores, while Intel Core i7 processors feature 8 P-cores (as well as higher frequencies and expanded cache sizes), all in all giving you a faster, smoother gaming experience.
What's more, the extra couple of P-cores of an Intel Core i7 processor will come in handy when live-streaming, as not only does the CPU have to run the game itself but also the broadcasting software.
