Cannot even get this thing hot!
review by: Anonymous rating:

operating system: Windows Vista

I have been running one of these new 920's in my new core i7 system build for about a week now. During install everything went smoothly and I didnt have to do anything to set it up in BIOS it was all autodected fine.

Like the previous reviewer stated I installed Firefox and a few other programs and it does it so quick, blink and you'll miss it! So far I've yet to find anything which can really tax it in Windows Vista 64bit, but I'm sure you CAD people could!

I am running mine on a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with 6GB Corsair 1600mhz CAS8 DDR3 RAM, with a Gigabyte ATI HD 4870X2 2GB DDR5 (with the potentital to get another and crossfire at a later date) with the latest and best PSU the Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W all in a Thermaltake Spedo Advanced Package case with 2 more red LED fans for that extra bling factor at night!

I decided to ditch the stock Intel cooler and heatsink and also their stock thermal paste and decided to sit my 920 under a Thermalright 120 1366 extreme Heatsink and fan combo and use Artic Silver 5 thermal paste.

My processor is idling a 30C degrees and the hottest I've seen it hit so far is only 38C degrees after some gaming. I am of course running at the stock 2.66mhz at present which I'll do in order to let the new thermal paste bed in a bit.

However, I have seen some people online overclocking these to 3.2ghz with the stock intel cooler or 4ghz on good air cooling on decent motherboards. I hope to try to overclock mine somewhere close to that in a few months time, but to-be-honest its performance is that good at present nothing really taxes it much to warrant overclocking. It even eats up my games at high res when paired with my ATI HD4870 2GB.

Overall then I am very glad I opted for this 920 over the core i7 940 or 965 (which are both over-priced and will be superceed by new improved intel chips in a few months time, thereby making their premium 'top-of-the-range'price valueless).

My advice is if you are looking to go Core i7 for your latest build buy this chip and use the money saved to spend on a top motherboard and graphics card. For example my Gigabyte EX58-UD5 supports up to 24GB of DDR3 well over 2ghz speeds and with future BIOS updates will support a few more different variants of Core i7 which may come along from Intel in the future.

You can never entirely future proof a new system, but the above advice I think is about as good as we can do at the moment in these uncertain financial times.

Great value for money
review by: Anonymous rating:

operating system: Windows Vista

Just built a new system and decided to go for the cheaper 920 i7 rather than the more expensive 940. So glad I did.

The performance increase in my 64bit Vista is amazing. Installing programs takes no time at all. It installed Firefox in less than a second! I didn't even notice it do it!

The stock Intel heatsink and fan keep the CPU nice and cool and are lower profile than some more expensive options and so improve overall case airflow.

Overclocking the 920 can easily get the same results as the 940, which is the main reason I am so happy went for this one. Do the maths.

Get yourself a good 1336 mobo (I recommend the ASUS P6T Deluxe OC Palm), some decent memory and you'll be so pleased.

Well done Ebuyer too on the fast, efficient service.

Buy one today, you won't be disapponited...

D0 Stepping...
review by: Anonymous operating system: Windows XP

I usually buy everything from ebuyer as the service is excellent. But....i cant see why ebuyer cant guarantee which stepping youll get - most other e-tailers do. Further, as ill be purchasing a new high end motherboard and memory at the same time costing the best part of 600 big ones...thats a lot of cash to lose for not putting 2 letters worth of info on the product description. Granted, there may be a few C0's floating round in stock but just offer these at a discounted price for those people that would be mad enough not to overclock these things.

Great Chip! (D0) But be warned

put it in installed all fine off i went, be warned on my gigabyte UD5 it defaulted the vcore to 1.25v, 1.25 is far too much for the new d0 stepping and it caused mine to run @ 60c idle, after reseating a few times i figured it out and now my vcore is at 0.928 oc'd to 3ghz (stock fan) and runs 44/46 idle and 55/58 full load.

as always excellent service from ebuyer

stepping
review by: Anonymous operating system: Not Applicable

stepping is pointless for overclocking unless all you want to measure is a lower temperature and with all the gear required for clocking you are better off buying a faster cpu and use stock cooler.

Excellent processor for the price!

Overclocks nicely up to 3.2ghz on stock cooler, so same as an i7 965 for a third of the price. Leave multiplier at 20x, increase BCLK to 160, turn off speedstep. Any higher will require a better cooler.
