How to make this work with Vista 32
review by:Anonymousoperating system:Windows Vista

This card works well.

However, there is an issue with Vista, despite the fact that the box tells you it is Vista certified, so let me save you a lot of pain and tell you what you need to do to get it working..

I found that drivers etc all installed okay, but everytime I tried to connect to a wireless network my PC locked up.

I returned the first card to Ebuyer, but the replacement did exactly the same. I downloaded the latest drivers and older drivers from D-Link but these didn't fix the problem.

Eventually, just as I was about to give up and ask for a refund, I connected the PC to the network via it's wired NIC and told it to do a windows update. Windows found a wireless driver from September 2009, that is NOT available via the D-Link website (at the time of writing this at least). I installed it, and now I'm all smiles. It works.

Save yourself a lot of heartache and throw the CD that comes with the NIC away!

D-Link Adaptors
review by:Anonymous rating:

I only bought D-Link to have Wireless Draft-N plus gigbit ethernet in the same box. Normally I would buy Netgear but their Draft-Ns at the time (year ago or so) were suffering "green ring of death" & other failures.

I can only mirror the disappointment of other reviews & comments here in using this with my D-Link DIR-655.

However, the DWA-142s USB "black pie on a cable" adaptors now completely replaced by USB pen adaptor DWA-140 (quickfind code: 130241), of which I have two, seem to work much better and I experienced a genuine improvement on XP with the new v1.40b01 driver.

Also, the DWA-142s always score a higher signal level than my DWA-547 at all times in any position directly compared in my small house.

I think I will seek out another DWA-142 or use a DWA-140 on an extension cable.

Driver installation contains malware
review by:Anonymous rating:

The DWA547 seems like a decent piece of hardware. However, computer components such as this come in two parts: the hardware and the software.

The software driver cannot be picked up by Windows hardware wizard from the CD and so it is required to use the installer on the CD to copy the drivers to your system. In so doing, however, it will also copy WlanGINA.dll to C:WINDOWSWlanGINAVersion1.0.4.0.

WlanGINA.dll is a malware product that overrides the functionality of the Windows log on screen by disabling it and preventing you from enabling it again. This means that you will now log on to your system via this DLL, which could potentially record your typed passwords, and forces you to use a traditional Windows 2K log on style interface.

Upon discovering this, I immediately removed this DLL from my system following the instructions provided by Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302346). This is simply a case of removing a registry key entry known as GinaDLL and then deleting the file. Having done so, the wireless network card continues to function as intended thus proving that there is absolutely no reason for even deploying this onto users systems in the first place.

The drivers for this product also disable Windows wireless networking for the product and instead replace the entire wireless networking subsystem with D-Link's alternative. This would be fine except that the quality of the product interface is incredibly tacky, badly laid out and poorly translated into English (D-Link is a German company). I also discovered that the network connection would not function while the workstation was locked in some cases, even while the GINA DLL was still present on my system, but this problem was intermittent and not always reproducible.

In light of all these issues, and mainly because the company sees fit to install malware on my system without any warning, I requested a full refund for the product from Ebuyer, which they granted, and will abstain from buying D-Link products ever again.

Solid product, sloppy drivers.

I had read in another review that this installed some kind of malicious dll that changed your login options, so I figured I would remove that. The only problem with that is that as soon as it installed, it crashed the whole system. On reboot, I got a blue screen error over and over. In the end I had to reload in safe mode and system restore.

My advice is this:
IF you get this, don't install it without something like WinPatrol or Spybot running, that will detect the installation of the GINA.DLL, and allow you to prevent it. With that blocked, everything works fine, but I won't buy anything by D-Link again.

Rubbish Support
review by:Anonymousoperating system:Windows 7

If I connect to my router via LAN cable I get 8MB - 10MB broadband.

Using this card my speed drops to less than 1MB. Called Dlink who kept me on hold for over 10 mins at 10p per minute only for them to say they dont know why??

I have installed the latest drivers from thier web site but still no good.

Pulled it out of my PC and threw it in the bin!!!!

Range Booster Problems
review by:Andrew Simmonds rating:

operating system:Windows Vista

I am writting this to inform all the people who are looking for a wireless network card and also are considering purchasing this card.

I was very happy when i got the card in the post next day prior to order, i though that this card would be simple to get going to my wireless network and how wrong i was...

I installed the software then restarting and put the card in. After this my computer froze on the login page of my Vista, i was suprised at this so decided to boot into safe mode to solve this problem, with no luck. I decided to turn to the experts of D-Link seeking advice, to find that they didnt mention that this card does'nt work with some Motherboards (Asus P5N-D) and they asked me to install the latest BIOS, so i though fair enough and did as they asked.

Tryed to reinstall the Device to find that i was still having the same issue dispite getting rid of the only option which could have fixed my device, baffled with what a mess this has made of my time and patience i decided to give up on the card, because it has no compatibility with anything i decided to send it back to ebuyer because this device clearly doesnt work with 5/10 peoples hardware.

I Conclude that this card might be a good product to purchase but beware that the card may come without being compatible with your motherboard, i learnt the hard way so check before purchasing, please.

Hope This Is Usefull For Anyone Looking For A Card (I Suggest A Bellkin Card)

Yours Faithfully
Andrew Simmonds
