What is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT?

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is built on AMD's latest GPU architecture, RDNA 3, which makes it and the RX 7900 XTX the world's first gaming GPUs designed with chiplet technology. You might've heard of chiplet technology already as AMD have used it extensively on their line-up of CPUs, going back to the first generation of Ryzen. Chiplet technology played an instrumental role in the success of Ryzen CPUs, and now it's looking like AMD's trying to replicate this success with their Radeon GPUs.

Chiplets have a number of advantages over your conventional 'monolithic' chip design. By splitting up one big chip into multiple chiplets, parts of the chip can be validated independent of each other. In the case of an RDNA 3-powered GPU, like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT, this could mean a single Graphics Compute Die (GCD) chiplet and multiple Memory Cache Die (MCD) chiplets. So, if one of these chiplets gets flagged as faulty, only the defective chiplet has to be thrown out - not the entire chip itself. This improves manufacturing yields, which reduces manufacturing costs, allowing AMD to be more competitive with their pricing.

You can learn more about RDNA 3 and Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs, including real-time raytracing, AI, and content creation performance, in our blog AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs - What You Need to Know.

Tech-specs - RX 7900 XT

Seeing as it's just missing an 'X' from its name, you might be led to believe that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT is only a slightly inferior version of the RX 7900 XTX. After all, the RX 6900 XT (AMD's last-gen offering) has the same number of Compute Units and Ray Accelerations as the RX 6950 XT, only it's clocked a tad slower. However, this definitely isn't the case with these new RX 7000 Series GPUs. There's quite a large difference between the RX 7900 XT featured on this page and its bigger brother, the RX 7900 XTX.

This time around, it's more than just clock speeds. Both graphics cards use the 'Navi 31' chip, but a decent portion of it is disabled on the RX 7900 XT. While the RX 7900 XTX features a fully unlocked version of the chip with 96 Compute Units and Ray Accelerators, the RX 7900 XT is cut down to 84 Compute Units and Ray Accelerators. Video memory sees a reduction too, going from 24GB of GDDR6 on the RX 7900 XTX to 20GB on the RX 7900 XT.

Power consumption and form-factor - RX 7900 XT

These differences are reflected in the cards' power consumption. AMD's reference design for the RX 7900 XT has its GPU boosting up to 2,400MHz, versus 2,500MHz for the RX 7900 XTX. So, all in all, the RX 7900 XT consumes less power than its bigger brother. With a typical board power of 300W, AMD recommends at least a 750W PSU to power an RX 7900 XT-equipped PC. To account for other high-wattage hardware in your system, like the latest 13th-Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPUs, you might want to bump up to a 751-900W unit.

Unlike NVIDIA, who've opted for the newest PCIe 5.0 16-pin power connector on their RTX 40 Series GPUs, AMD's sticking to two tried-and-true 8-pin power connectors on the RX 7900 XT. Compared to the triple-slot RTX 4080 it's going up against, AMD's reference design for the RX 7900 XT comes in at 2.5 slots and 276mm long. We've got plenty of custom RX 7900 XTs from all the best gaming brands like PowerColor, XFX, and Sapphire. Some of these cards might use beefier power and cooling solutions, however, so double-check if your PSU and case can support them.

Gaming Performance - RX 7900 XT

At the RX 7000 Series' unveiling, AMD only shared performance figures for the RX 7900 XTX. In the run-up to the card's launch, however, they released a small handful of in-game benchmarks for the RX 7900 XT too. Of course, these benchmarks could've been cherry-picked by AMD, so look out for potential RX 7900 XT coverage on our YouTube channel. Nonetheless, the spread of games encompasses a range of genres and engines, so it's likely a good representation of the RX 7900 XT's performance.

Rasterization

First up's rasterised games. At a native 4K resolution and max settings, the RX 7900 XT achieved up to 157fps in Resident Evil Village, 117fps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 60fps in Cyberpunk 2077, and 85fps in Watch Dogs: Legion. Cyberpunk's clearly the most demanding out of the bunch. For comparison, the RX 6950 XT (AMD's last-gen flagship) got 43fps in Cyberpunk, while the RX 7900 XTX achieved 72fps. As it's so powerful, AMD uses "up to" in this context as the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX could very well be CPU-limited depending on the system they're in.

Raytracing

Moving onto ray-traced games, this time using AMD's FSR to reconstruct to a 4K resolution, the RX 7900 XT achieved up to 171 FPS in Resident Evil Village, 64 FPS in Dying Light 2, 57 FPS Cyberpunk 2077, and 81 FPS in Hitman 3. For comparison, the RX 6950 XT got 32 FPS in ray-traced Cyberpunk 2077, while the RX 7900 XTX achieved 62 FPS.
