Consumer Graphics Cards vs Professional Graphics Cards

When you look at the spec-sheet of professional graphics cards, you'll find they often share the same core, fundamental hardware and technologies as consumer graphics cards. For instance, the workstation-class NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada Generation graphics card is based off NVIDIA's AD102 graphics processing unit. This is the same GPU that's found in NVIDIA's gaming-focused GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. However, professional graphics cards will typically feature an 'unlocked' version of the GPU, with all its cores enabled for even faster performance. Again looking at the RTX 4090, that card's GPU is equipped with an impressive 16,384 CUDA Cores. But the RTX 6000 pushes it even higher to a whopping 18,176 CUDA Cores.

Video Memory

Ridiculously high core counts aren't the only thing professional graphics cards bring to the table. Video memory, or VRAM for short, is another area in which professional graphics cards have an upper hand over consumer graphics cards. Whether it's 3-D animation or machine learning, professional workloads and their respective applications crave more video memory than consumer graphics cards can offer. While the RTX 4090's 24GB of VRAM may be more than enough for even the most resource-intensive triple-A games, most professional software will gobble it all up in an instant. So essentially, the more VRAM the better, and that's why you'll find professional graphics cards with 32 or even 48GB of VRAM.

Error-Correcting Code

What's more, professional graphics cards feature error-correction code (ECC) memory which, as the name implies, detects and corrects memory errors. Check out our server memory page for more information on error-correction code. A small memory error while gaming won't be the end of the world, but any amount of data corruption will invalidate the result of a render or simulation, wasting valuable time and resources. ECC memory on professional graphics cards ensures maximum stability and reliability for round-the-clock operation.

Double-Precision Format & Certified Drivers

The hardware of a professional graphics card is just one half of the equation. There's also the software to look at. To churn out hundreds of frames-per-second in games, for example, consumer graphics cards run fast but imprecise 32-bit floating-point calculations. This introduces the same issue as non-ECC memory, where one incorrect calculation could potentially write off a whole day's worth of work. To ensure the most reliable results, professional graphics cards compute in a double-precision floating-point format. Professional graphics cards come with exclusive drivers optimised and validated specifically for the top professional applications as well.
