Although it is a little simplistic the more memory your laptop has the quicker it will run. Laptop memory helps the machine process data and the quicker it can do so the faster your programmes will run.
If you only use your laptop for word processing and surfing the web a small amount of memory will be fine. But for gaming and other intensive applications more memory will be needed. Choosing Memory
There is a massive choice available from well-known brands such as Apple, Corsair and Kingston. When you are looking at speeds the memory modules are usually differentiated by type and clock rating. A typical example would be DDR3 1600MHz which is faster than DDR3 1066MHz.
Different capacities are also available with the most common being either 2, 4, 8 or 16GB modules. In many laptops the memory is stored in two slots. So a machine with 8GB of memory probably has 2x4GB modules. Other machines will have just one slot and a single module of memory.
When choosing your memory and before you upgrade check your laptop specification as it will indicate the maximum memory that can be installed. Subject to these limits memory modules with more speed allied with a higher capacity will result in a more powerful and efficient computer. DIY
So you are going to buy some additional laptop memory. But are you able to install it yourself? The answer is yes. And no. It depends on the machine. Most laptops have a compartment on its underside where you can easily access and install memory.
Some machines however seal the memory into the case. In this instance you should not attempt to change the memory yourself but should take it to an authorised technician.
