GeForce RTX 4070 Family - Where Does the RTX 4070 SUPER Fit?

With the arrival of the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series, the GeForce RTX 4070 family of NVIDIA graphics cards has grown to four strong. First there was the RTX 4070 Ti right at the beginning of 2023, followed a few months later by the standard RTX 4070. Now, both these NVIDIA graphics cards have received their SUPER variants, in the form of the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and, as you'll find on this page, the RTX 4070 SUPER.

What Does SUPER Mean for NVIDIA?

Before we delve into its specs, let's first give some context as to what the 'SUPER' in RTX 4070 SUPER means. Simply put, NVIDIA's SUPER branding is used to denote an updated, or 'supercharged', version of an existing product. SUPER cards aren't typically that big of a departure in terms of specs (that's reserved more for Ti cards), but what tweaks and improvements they do have make them all-round better than their predecessors, often at or near the same price. As you'll see below, however, the RTX 4070 SUPER offers up a big spec bump, despite being 'just' a SUPER card.

RTX 4070 SUPER Specs

Like the standard RTX 4070, the RTX 4070 SUPER is based on NVIDIA's AD104 GPU. This time around, however, the chip is equipped with 7,168 CUDA Cores - a 20% increase over the standard RTX 4070. In fact, this falls just short of the RTX 4070 Ti's 7,680 CUDA Cores, so expect an appreciable bump in performance. NVIDIA is claiming that the RTX 4070 SUPER is faster than last-generation's RTX 3090, all while consuming a fraction of the power thanks to the RTX 40 Series' ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace GPU architecture.

And, crucially, this is without DLSS Frame Generation, a technology exclusive to these RTX 40 Series GPUs. DLSS Frame Generation, as the name implies, generates entirely new frames in-between existing ones using AI, amplifying your games' frame rates for a smoother visual experience. RT Cores and Tensor Cores see a boost, too, from 46 RT Cores and 184 Tensor Cores on the standard RTX 4070 to 56 RT Cores and 224 Tensor Cores on the RTX 4070 SUPER. This will result in better real-time ray tracing and AI performance. Otherwise, the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 SUPER share the same 12GB GDDR6X video memory configuration on a 192-bit wide memory bus.

RTX 4070 SUPER Power Consumption and Form Factor

Ada Lovelace-powered NVIDIA graphics cards are impressively efficient for their performance. The RTX 4070 SUPER - a 1440p-class card - is rated at a TDP of just 220W, 20W higher than the standard RTX 4070. In comparison, the roughly performance-equivalent AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT has a 263W TDP. Where performance-per-watt is concerned, it's hard to beat NVIDIA.

To power a RTX 4070 SUPER-equipped gaming PC, NVIDIA recommend a 650W power supply at minimum. Mind you, this is for NVIDIA's reference design for the RTX 4070 SUPER. Some factory-overclocked models from add-in card providers may require a bit more juice.

Given the RTX 4070 SUPER's relatively low power requirement, most of the cards on this page feature dual-slot, dual-fan coolers that should comfortably fit in a mid-tower computer case, or even a small form-factor one at a squeeze. Though if you want the coolest temperatures possible, there's a handful of triple-fan models available as well.
