Why Do I Need a Smart Plug?
You can use a smart plug to, effectively, add Wi-Fi to a power outlet. This wireless connection can then be used to control the flow of electricity from the outlet to the smart plug via an app on your smartphone. When toggled on, the smart plug will pass power through to whatever's plugged into it. And when toggled off, the smart plug will draw a miniscule amount of power for Wi-Fi, 1-2 watts at most.
Scheduling
These apps let you do a lot more than just toggle a smart plug's power state. You can set schedules to turn a smart plug (and in turn the device connected to it) on and off at specific times. This is a great way to lower your energy bill and combat 'vampire devices', which consume energy even when not in use. For example, let's take a small domestic appliance like a toaster. Rather than having it draw a little bit of power from the wall all day long (which'll add up over time), a smart plug can be used to power it only in the morning for breakfast.
Of course, you could do this all manually. But flicking a power outlet's switch on every time you want to use a device and, more importantly, remembering to flick it off when you're done gets monotonous. A smart plug lets you automate this process, saving you from repeating the same action over and over again.
Peace of Mind
Alternatively, this scheduling functionality could be used to turn on a couple of lights of an evening while you're away on holiday, making it seem as if someone's home. Plus, these apps are great for simply checking if a device is on or off. Out for the day but paranoid you've left your hair straighteners on at home? No need to turn back - just pull out your smartphone and double-check the smart plug they're connected to is off.
Are Smart Plugs Compatible with Virtual Assistants?
Yes, nearly every smart plug on the market today is compatible with Google Assistant and/or Amazon Alexa, giving you hands-free control over your devices. Plug a device into a smart plug and say to your smart speaker "Hey Google, turn on [plug name]" to give it power. However, it's worth nothing that there aren't nearly as many Siri-compatible smart plugs out there. Keep this in mind if you're invested solely in the Apple ecosystem.
Which Devices Work Best with Smart Plugs?
Smart plugs work particularly well with devices that have a physical on/off switch that can be kept in the 'on' position. This will allow the device to turn on as soon as it receives power, which can be controlled with a smart plug. Most kettles' switches can be left 'on' while powered down. You could connect a kettle to a smart plug and schedule it to turn on when you wake up, ready for your morning brew. Lamps, fans, electric blankets: the list of devices that work well with smart plugs is extensive. Some devices, on the other hand, may go into a stand-by mode and need to be manually woken up with a button press.
