RTX 3050 6GB vs RTX 3050 8GB

There's more to the RTX 3050 6GB than the name might suggest. It's not just an ordinary RTX 3050 with 6GB of video memory instead of 8GB. Sure, it's based off the same AD107 GPU as the late-2022 revision of the RTX 3050 8GB, but its specs have been cut across the board.

While the RTX 3050 8GB is equipped with 2,560 CUDA Cores, 20 RT Cores, and 80 Tensor Cores, the RTX 3050 6GB is cut down to 2,304 CUDA Cores, 18 RT Cores, and 72 Tensor Cores. It's clocked slower, too, with a 1.47GHz boost clock versus the RTX 3050 8GB's 1.78GHz boost clock. And not to mention the 6GB of GDDR6 is on a narrower 96-bit wide memory bus, resulting in slower memory bandwidth.

Despite both being "RTX 3050" graphics cards, they'll perform notably differently from each other. Going off early benchmarks, expect the RTX 3050 6GB to run around 20% slower than the RTX 3050 8GB. So, once again, NVIDIA's naming schemes prove to be a bit confusing. We're reminded of the time when NVIDIA tried to pass off what's now known as the RTX 4070 Ti as the RTX 4080 12GB, even though its specs were an obvious downgrade from the regular RTX 4080.

RTX 3050 6GB Power Consumption and Form Factor

All that said, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB definitely has its place in certain scenarios, due mostly in part to its low power requirement. The RTX 3050 6GB is rated at an ultra-efficient TGP (total graphics power) of just 70W. That's almost half of the 130W RTX 3050 8GB. As a result, the RTX 3050 6GB can be powered by a motherboard's PCIe slot alone - no need for any sort of external power connection. NVIDIA recommend a 300W PSU to power a whole RTX 3050 6GB-equipped PC, meaning you can drop the card in many an off-the-shelf home or office desktop PC for a big graphical performance boost. And as they've only got to dissipate 70 watts' worth of heat, most of the RTX 3050 6GB graphics cards on this page feature refreshingly compact coolers. There's even low-profile, single-slot models for those running small form-factor builds. So, no matter the size of your computer case, an RTX 3050 6GB will almost certainly fit in it.

Upgrade for GTX 1650 Gamers

NVIDIA is positioning the RTX 3050 6GB as a "great upgrade for GeForce GTX 1650 and GTX 1050 gamers to step up to RTX", which is a point worth touching on. The GTX 1650 is one of the most popular GPUs in the Steam Hardware Survey, so there's clearly a demand for this class of card somewhere out there on the market. It's all too easy to fixate on high-refresh 4K gaming and real-time ray tracing. But if you're just looking to play less resource-intensive esports titles like League of Legends and Valorant at a decent frame rate, then a card like the RTX 3050 6GB is a super budget-friendly way of getting into PC gaming. Plus, as it's an RTX card, it'll support DLSS Super Resolution for even faster performance. Do note, however, that the RTX 3050 6GB is a RTX 30 Series card, not an RTX 40 Series one, so it doesn't support the newer DLSS Frame Generation.
