What is IP telephony?

An IP phone is a telephone designed to work with an IP Phone System. An IP phone is designed to support the transmission of voice over the internet. Other names for IP phones are VoIP phones, SIP Phones or Softphones. VoIP stands for 'voice over internet protocol', and IP phones use the internet instead of physical telephone lines to transmit and receive calls. VoIP converts the voice into a digital signal, though if you call a standard phone number the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before reaching its destination. VoIP means you can make telephone calls directly through a computer or laptop, a traditional phone connected to a special adapter or a special VoIP phone.

How are IP phones different from landlines?

In terms of the actual physical unit, ie. the phone itself, an IP phone and a 'normal' phone are very similar - in fact, to the average user they may be more-or-less indistinguishable as they look the same and seem to function the same. However, the difference is the way that the voice is transmitted and received. IP phones transmit the voice digitally using nothing but your internet connection. Because they do this, they bypass all of the hardware cabling, exchanges and infrastructure put in place by telephone companies. This means, therefore, a significant saving can be made.
