What is an Enterprise Hard Drive?
An enterprise hard drive has been specifically designed to cater for the demands of a business or organizational environment. All hard drives are designed for specific 'duty cycles'. A desktop PC will undergo much less general 'wear and tear' than a server computer, which is always on, so therefore always driving data. Server computing has different demands and enterprise storage drives deal with this by employing extra mechanical functions and firmware upgrades. Enterprise drives produce 24/7 uptime and can include things not found in consumer drives (such as cooling mechanisms inside the chassis, sensors which can detect and correct vibration, and controls for airflow inside the chassis. What are the benefits of an Enterprise hard drive?
Consumer drives tend to quieter and are a lower-cost option, but they are really built for standard laptops, desktops, and some lower-cost workstations. Enterprise drives are the workhorses. They provide reliability, and much higher performance at a larger capacity. If you are looking for issue-free operations, then Enterprise hard drives are the go-to choice for businesses.
Heavy workloads
While most consumer class hard drives are designed for single desktop operations and standard day-to-day tasks, they can’t really handle more than a 30TB workload over a twelfth month period. They are also known for having higher failure rates, which only go up with increased use. That’s fine if you’re doing stuff which isn’t too taxing. With Enterprise drives, in a massive RAID configuration, if a drive fails, a replacement and re-sync will occur. What does that mean? It means that this will vastly increase the workload on that drive. In turn, this will increase failure rates and more re-syncs until the drives will become unusable. There is no need to worry when it comes to Enterprise hard drives, they can take the pressure until the cows come home.
