What is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE?

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is a high-end AMD graphics card which originally launched exclusively in China in 2023. 2023 was the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit, hence the unique name. In certain territories, the GPU was also available as part of a pre-built gaming PC.

It wasn't until 2024 that AMD saw fit to release the RX 7900 GRE worldwide. In terms of performance, the RX 7900 GRE sits between AMD's existing RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT graphics cards, making it ideal for high-refresh 1440p gaming.

How does the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE compare to the RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT?

Like the RX 7900 XT, the 7900 GRE is based on AMD's Navi 31 GPU. It features 80 Compute Units, 80 Ray Accelerators, and 160 AI Accelerators. This isn't too far behind the 84 Compute Units, 84 Ray Accelerators, and 168 AI Accelerators of the RX 7900 XT.

But unlike the 20GB RX 7900 XT, the RX 7900 GRE is armed with 16GB of GDDR6 video memory on a narrower 256-bit wide memory bus. In this regard, the RX 7900 GRE is more like the RX 7800 XT, which is equipped with the same memory configuration. However, while the 7800 XT's memory reaches 19.5 Gbps of bandwidth, the 7900 GRE is cut to 18.5 Gbps.

Simply put, you can think of the RX 7900 GRE as a fusion of the RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT. The RX 7900 GRE has more cores than the RX 7800 XT, sure, but its memory holds it back somewhat.

How much power does the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE use?

Interestingly, although it's a higher-tier product, the RX 7900 GRE actually consumes a little less power than the RX 7800 XT. AMD rates the RX 7900 GRE for a typical board power of 260W (with a 700W PSU recommendation at minimum), versus the RX 7800 XT's typical board power of 263W.

You'll see this power reduction reflected in the card's boost clock, too. The RX 7900 GRE is clocked at 2,245MHz, whereas the RX 7900 XT can hit 2,400MHz. This, paired with the reduced memory bandwidth, keeps the RX 7900 XT decently ahead of the RX 7900 GRE, despite both cards' similar core counts on paper.

260 watts' worth of heat is a fair bit to dissipate. As such, most of the cards on this page feature triple-slot, triple-fan coolers. So, before you buy one of these RX 7900 GRE graphics cards, be sure it fits in your computer case.
