AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Specifications

Based on a new Navi 32 GPU, the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT falls in the middle of the Radeon RX 7000 Series line-up, in-between the entry-level RX 7600 (Navi 33) and enthusiast-class RX 7900 XT (Navi 31).

RX 7800 XT vs RX 7700 XT

There's also the RX 7700 XT, which launched alongside the RX 7800 XT. It's equipped with a cut-down version of the same Navi 32 GPU. While the RX 7800 XT features all 60 Compute Units, 60 Ray Accelerators, and 120 AI Accelerators of the Navi 32 GPU, the RX 7700 XT has 54 Compute Units, 54 Ray Accelerators, and 108 AI Accelerators instead.

This isn't a massive difference, mind you, considering the fact that the RX 7800 XT is an entire tier higher up the product stack. Historically, there's more of a jump in core count from the 700 to 800-class card. Take last-generation's RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 XT, for instance, which have a difference of 32 Compute Units betweem them.

With a boost clock of 2,430MHz, the RX 7800 XT is clocked slightly slower than the RX 7700 XT at 2,554MHz. But if you look at the performance figures below and over on the RX 7700 XT's page, you'll see that the RX 7800 XT's real-world gaming performance is a fair bit faster.

16GB GDDR6 VRAM

Where the RX 7800 XT clearly delineates itself from the RX 7700 XT is in video memory. Boasting a 256-bit wide memory bus, the RX 7800 XT is armed with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM clocked at up to 19.5Gbps. On the other hand, the RX 7700 XT's narrower 192-bit bus restricts it to 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and it's ran at a slower 18Gbps.

In the here and now, 12GB of VRAM will be enough for these two AMD graphics cards' 1440p performance target. However, there's been a noticeable increase in the memory consumption of games since the start of the generation. If this trend is set to continue, then the RX 7800 XT's 16GB of VRAM will prove beneficial. If you're undecided on which of these two AMD graphics cards to get, it may be worth saving up a few extra notes for the more future-proof RX 7800 XT.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Gaming Performance

Now, let's look at what's most important - the RX 7800 XT's gaming performance. AMD has published a number of performance figures for the RX 7800 XT on their site.

At 1440p ultra settings, the RX 7800 XT reached an average of 127 FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 87 FPS in The Callisto Protocol, 98 FPS in Hogwarts Legacy, 76 FPS in The Last of Us: Part 1, and 77 FPS in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

As for some ray-traced games, the RX 7800 XT ran Dying Light 2 (RT On) at 89 FPS, Forza Horizon 5 (RT Extreme) at 95 FPS, Resident Evil 4 (RT High) at 101 FPS, and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (RT Very High) at 98 FPS.

FidelityFX Super Resolution

Crucially, all these games were tested at a native 1440p resolution. In select titles, you can boost the RX 7800 XT's gaming performance even further by enabling AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, or FSR for short.

With FSR, games are rendered at a lower internal resolution and then reconstructed up to a higher output resolution - say, from 960p to 1440p - resulting in a big frame rate jump, with a minimal loss to image quality. FSR is supported by a growing number of games, including many of the above, so it's well worth a shot.

RX 7800 XT vs RTX 4070

Where gaming performance is concerned, the NVIDIA equivalent to the RTX 7800 XT is the RTX 4070. Looking at AMD's own slides from the RX 7800 XT's announcement, their card is purportedly 3.5% on average faster than the RTX 4070 at 1440p ultra settings.

In fact, it's quite a bit more performant than the RTX 4070 when using traditional rasterised graphics. Both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 run 23% faster on the RX 7800 XT.

It's only when you enable ray-tracing that the RX 7800 XT's gaming performance falls short of the RTX 4070. At best Dying Light 2 in its RT Mode only runs 9% slower on the RX 7800 XT, while at worst Doom Eternal's RT Mode runs 18% slower.

All that said, keep in mind that the RX 7800 XT is a 16GB card. That's a 33% increase in memory over the 12GB RTX 4070. As we progress further into the generation and more memory-hungry games are released, performance could lean in favour of the RX 7800 XT.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Power Consumption & Design

Seeing as it's faster, the RX 7800 XT consumes more power than the RX 7700 XT, but it's not by that much. As per AMD's spec-sheet, the RX 7800 XT's typical board power sits around 263W, with AMD recommended a 700W PSU to power an entire RX 7800 XT-equipped gaming PC. Switch over to the RX 7700 XT and the typical board power only drops to 245W. Both cards draw their power from 2x 8-pin power connectors.

Of course, these are only AMD's own figures. Many of the third-party RX 7800 XT graphics cards from the likes of PowerColor and Sapphire come factory-overclocked for even faster out-of-the-box performance. They'll necessitate a slightly higher wattage PSU as a result, so keep an eye out for that.

Third-Party Models

AMD's reference design for the RX 7800 XT is a 2-fan, 2.5-slot affair that's 267mm in length. On this page, you'll find that nearly all third-party RX 7800 XT graphics cards have instead opted for even larger 3-fan coolers. So, before you buy an RX 7800 XT, double-check that you've got enough room for it in your computer case.
