    What Is USB?

Before we take a look in to the differences between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 we will take a look at USB as a whole. USB stands for universal serial bus and it is the standard used to connect peripherals, (which includes keyboards, cameras, mice, phone chargers, flash drives and much, more more) to computers and various adapters. A USB Flash Drive, also known as a memory stick is also used to transfer data between various devices.

    Early days

Both USB 2 and USB 3 are built upon the first USB technologies, USB 1.0 and 1.1, which were both released in in the 1990s. As you would expect, the 1.0 standard was the most basic and slowest of all the models, with a maximum speed of 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps). Following this, USB 1.1 was able to transfer at a speed of about 12 Mbps, which is considered pretty slow today.

    The year 2000

It was the year 2000 when USB 2.0 was launched and it delivered data at 40 times faster than previously, at 480Mbps. But now, if you compare that to USB 3.0, that is quite slow. USB 3.0 can transfer at 10 times faster (a speed of 4,800 Mbps. So, now you know what came before, but USB 2.0 and 3.0 are the two most popular options as of November 2021. Whether you happen to be looking for bulk flash drives or just trying to make your life a little easier with the best tech bits and pieces, both USB 2.0 and 3.0 are excellent options for you to consider.

    USB speeds

As we have already mentioned, USB 2.0 offers a transfer rate of approximately 480 Mbps, whereas USB 3.0 offers a transfer rate of about 4,800 Mbps which is equal to roughly 5 GB. But what are these super-fast speeds useful for? Well, if you happen to be backing up or transferring lots of data from an external hard drive it will save lots of time. You should note that these speeds reflect perfect conditions according to the manufacturers, but no one really knows what the perfect conditions are, so actual speeds will be lower than the figures provided.

Why do I need a 2.0 USB Flash Drive?

Versatile, practical and so easy to use, a USB flash drive should be an essential for anyone who uses a computer. Perfect for storing files such as documents and images, and small enough to fit into your pocket, they are great for keeping back-ups safe.

USB flash drives come in a variety of colours, designs and styles in order to suit your preferences. If you need any more information about USB flash drives click here!
