AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Specifications

Alongside the RX 7700 XT, AMD also launched the RX 7800 XT. Hardware-wise, there's not that much difference between these two AMD graphics cards.

RX 7700 XT vs RX 7800 XT

Both the RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT are based on a new Navi 32 GPU. For context, the enthusiast-class RX 7900 XT is equipped with a Navi 31 GPU, and at the entry-level the RX 7600 uses a Navi 33 GPU, placing the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT right in the middle of the AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series line-up.

However, while the RX 7800 XT features a fully-enabled Navi 32 GPU with all 60 Compute Units, 60 Ray Accelerators, and 120 AI Accelerators, the RX 7700 XT is cut down a smidge to 54 Compute Units, 54 Ray Accelerators, and 108 AI Accelerators. To make up for this, the RX 7700 XT is clocked slightly faster at 2,554MHz versus the RX 7800 XT at 2,430MHz.

That said, when you compare the new RX 7700 XT against last-generation's RX 6700 XT, it's quite the substantial upgrade. AMD has bumped the 700-class card up from 40 Compute Units and Ray Accelerators, not to mention that fact it's built on the newer and more efficient RDNA 3 GPU architecture.

12GB GDDR6 VRAM

Where we see a bigger difference is in the cards' memory configuration. Designed around a 192-bit memory interface, the RX 7700 XT gets 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM running at up to 18Gbps, whereas the 256-bit RX 7800 XT gets 16GB at up to 19.5Gbps. Given how memory-hungry many AAA games have gotten, this will make the RX 7800 XT the more future proof of the two, though 12GB of VRAM is enough in the here and now for the RX 7700 XT's 1440p performance target.

AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Gaming Performance

AMD is positioning the RX 7700 XT as a mid-range graphics card for maxed-out 1440p gaming in the latest AAA titles at higher-than-60 frame rates. To back this claim up, let's take a look at some performance figures provided by AMD.

At 1440p and max settings, the RX 7700 XT reached an average of 106 FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 62 FPS in The Last of Us: Part 1. As for ray-traced titles, Dying Light 2 ran at 75 FPS and in 'RT Very High' and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales ran at 80 FPS.

FidelityFX Super Resolution

Crucially, all these games were tested at a native 1440p resolution. You'll be able to boost performance even further in select titles by taking advantage of AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, or FSR for short. With FSR, games are rendered at a lower internal resolution and then reconstructed up to a higher output resolution, resulting in a big frame rate jump.

RX 7700 XT vs RTX 4060 Ti

AMD has also directly compared the RX 7700 XT against the RTX 4060 Ti from NVIDIA. According to AMD, their card is on average 12% faster in a slew of games. It's 26% faster in Cyberpunk 2077, 21% faster in The Last of Us: Part 1, and 19% faster in Red Dead Redemption 2. When ray-tracing is enabled, the RX 7700 XT matches the 4060 Ti's performance in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but it's 9% slower in Doom Eternal.

AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Power Consumption & Design

Subsequently, the RX 7700 XT consumes less power than the higher-spec RX 7800 XT, but again it's not by much. As per AMD's spec-sheet, the typical board power for the RX 7700 XT is 245W, with AMD recommending at least a 700W PSU to power a whole RX 7700 XT-equipped gaming PC. Some RX 7700 XT models may come pre-overclocked from the factory for even faster out-of-the-box performance and require a slightly higher wattage PSU. Despite being a whole tier higher up the product stack, the RX 7800 XT only consumes a bit more power at 263W. Both cards draw their power from 2x 8-pin power connectors.

No Reference Design

And unlike the RX 7800 XT, there's no reference design by AMD for the RX 7700 XT. The only RX 7700 XT graphics cards you'll find will be third-party models from the likes of PowerColor and Sapphire. To dissipate 245 watts' worth of heat, most RX 7700 XT graphics cards employ a 3-fan, 2.5-slot cooling solution. So, before you buy an RX 7700 XT, double-check that you've got enough room for it in your computer case.
