International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s thought to have begun in 1919, inspired by 15,000 female garment workers who went on strike in New York City in protest at poor working conditions. In 2022, the day continues to raise awareness of equality issues, gender parity and women’s achievements. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias which focuses on a gender-equal world that is free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that is diverse and inclusive.
We grabbed a couple of minutes with Ebuyer’s very own Amber Smith, Sales Director.
When you first started out, what were your ambitions? And was working in the tech industry ever a part of your plan? “From being very young I always wanted to run my own company, or be a director of a company,” says Amber. “The IT industry was something I saw as a constantly growing market so thought it’d be the right fit for me in which to develop my career.”
But do you think it’s harder for women to succeed in what is a predominantly male-dominated industry? “I think this industry can be a ‘boys club’ from time to time,” nods Amber, “but throughout the years more and more women have come through in the IT industry, which has helped the balance. But working with mostly men isn’t something I have seen as a challenge or made it harder. If anything, it can make it easier!”
We ask what advice she would give to women thinking of working in the tech industry? “Do what you love!” she says enthusiastically. “I love seeing the solutions that technology can bring to people and that’s what drives me forward with my work and my career. Technology can help people with learning difficulties overcome certain issues and help them achieve their full potential, Microsoft’s Immersive Reader can convert text to speech and vice versa – and there are so many more life-changing applications.”
What personal attributes have helped you achieve your success so far? “Well, I do get told regularly that I’m very passionate about Ebuyer and what we do – and I think that’s quite accurate! I’m always trying to see the positive in things rather than the negative – and I think this helps me and others drive forward and achieve our goals.”
Finally, we ask Amber about any personal ambitions or things she’d like to do in the future. “I’d like to launch Ebuyer into Europe, that would be nice!” she smiles. “I’d also like to tour Italy… and go to watch the Superbowl live!” But those things will have to wait for Amber, as she dashes off to another meeting…
